The Directorate of Environment, Energy and Natural Resources through its Compliance and Natural Resources Units, today in collaboration with the National Government Administrative Office (NGAO) and National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) held a public participation meeting with sand miners and residents of Isaku area in South Maragoli ward, Vihiga Sub County.
The session provided an opportunity to assess sand harvesting and quarrying activities in the community and address concerns on its apparent negative impacts on public infrastructure, environment and social cohesion. As part of the meeting, the community was sensitized on the proposed sand harvesting and quarrying policy that seeks to among others formalize the sector, enhance environmental safeguards and improve livelihoods of practitioners.
The meeting was attended by the Vihiga Assistant County Commissioner, officers from NEMA Vihiga County, County Director Disaster Management, Area Chief and Deputy headteacher Isaku Primary.
