VIHIGA QUEENS BOW OUT OF CECAFA AT POSITION FOUR
Kenyan representatives at the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League – CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers Vihiga Queens lost one nil to Buja Queens from Burundi to finish position 4 out of the 9 teams that participated in the tournament held in Uganda between August 12-30th 2023.
Vihiga Queens, who are four-time Kenya Women Premier League winners kicked off their journey by silencing New Generation FC from Zanzibar three goals to one in an opening Group B match at the Philip Omondi Stadium – Lugogo on 13th August 2023. In their second match on 15th August 2023, the Vihiga County-based club defeated AS Kigali from Rwanda one goal to nil before losing one goal to JKT Queens from Tanzania to finish second in Group B with 6 points, thus qualifying to the Semi Finals level.
Played at the FTC Njeru Stadium in Jinja on Saturday 19th August 2023, Vihiga Queens squared it out with the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) where they lost 2-1 during extra time. As a result, they faced Buja Queens on the tournament’s final day to contest for the 3rd/4th slot in a thrilling match played at FTC Njeru Stadium where they lost one nil to the Burundians hence finishing position 4.
Nonetheless, it goes into history that Vihiga Queens were the inaugural champions of the CAF Women’s Champions League – CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers in 2021 when the competition was held in Nairobi, but failed to participate in the second edition that took place in Tanzania (2022) following a FIFA suspension on Kenya.
