The International Day of Persons With Disabilities aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development.
Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo today presided over the County celebrations at Mbale Municipal grounds where more than 100 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) received mobility devices courtesy of a partnership between the County Government of Vihiga and Rani Ramchandani Foundation.
According to the Governor, his administration has instituted several measures to ensure that matters disability have been addressed.
“We have implemented the Disability Act by constituting a Disability Board that will handle your issues. Plans are also underway to set up a Disability directorate to specifically execute your activities,” Said Dr. Ottichilo.
The County Boss also stated that the County Government has initiated talks with Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) to establish a PWD learning centre at Itando that will equip them with knowledge and necessary skills for the current job market.
Additionally, the Governor urged the Disability board to prioritize setting up a PWD centre while developing their strategic plan.
On her part, Rani Ramchandani Foundation Chief Executive Officer (CEO) said the devices comprise of modern wheelchairs, walking frames and white canes to easen the PWDs’ movement.
The foundation also donated sanitary towels to the PWDs.
Department Of Gender, Culture and Social Services County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Anne Desma assured the PWDs that her department is focused on supporting them become self-sustainable especially through own leadership as outlined in this year’s theme : Amplifying the leadership of Persons With Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.’
