Senior Deputy Secretary in the State Department for Environment and Climate Change John Elungata today on behalf of Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Mulongo Barasa paid Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo a courtesy call where they held a round table discussion on the current state of efforts to reforest Maragoli Hills.
Dr. Ottichilo acknowledged continuous support the National Government has accorded to Vihiga, noting that this is the fourth time the Ministry is carrying out the exercise in the County.
The Governor further added that his government has ensured the local community benefits from casual jobs at the site.
According to the County Boss, Maragoli Hills’ success story has enabled the County attract like-minded partners in efforts to conserve the forest.
Chief Officer in charge of Environment, Energy, Natural Resources and Climate Change Dr. Richard Boiyo on his part said the County has partnered with the Ministry in areas such as;
– Fencing of Maragoli Hills
– The Planet Gold which is now picking up as contractors have been trained in bidding process to enable implementation of the project
– Establishment of a Green Centre in partnership with NEMA
– REREC MoU on promoting sustainable energy practices
The team later visited Mungoma area in Maragoli Hills where alongside Community Forest Association (CFA) members planted over 10,000 indigenous tree seedlings.
