VIHIGA COUNTY MAKES HISTORY WITH NEW FOOD & NUTRITION SECURITY LAW.

The Vihiga County Food and Nutrition Security Bill, 2025, was today signed into law by Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo, marking a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to ensure the health and wellbeing of its residents. This groundbreaking legislation is expected to dramatically improve food and nutrition security across Vihiga, paving the way for a healthier, more resilient population.
By establishing robust coordination structures and mainstreaming food and nutrition security in county planning, the new law provides a comprehensive legal framework to implement Articles 43(1) and 53(1)(c) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010. The anticipated impact includes enhanced access to nutritious food, improved health outcomes, and greater resource mobilization for sustained food systems.
Governor Ottichilo emphasized the transformative potential of this law, stating, “Healthcare systems without nutrition cannot work. By operationalizing this Bill, we are embedding nutrition into our governance systems, ensuring that policy and legal frameworks support every citizen’s right to adequate food and nutrition.”
Developed in collaboration with Nutrition International, the Bill is set to foster a sustainable, secure food system that benefits every segment of the population, particularly the most vulnerable. Ultimately, this law is expected to lead to a healthier, more productive Vihiga County, where food security is a reality for all.
