Traders in Vihiga will soon enjoy a more conducive, secure, and dignified business environment following the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Gambogi and Cheptulu ESP Markets, undertaken jointly by the County Government of Vihiga and the National Government.
According to the County Executive Committee Member for Commerce, Tourism and Cooperatives, Hon. Lunani Joseph, these projects form part of President William Ruto’s national agenda to deliver 400 modern markets across the country—an initiative already underway in Luanda, Esibuye, Esirulo Majengo, Mbale, and Banja.
Each of the new markets in Gambogi and Cheptulu will feature:
✔ 200 modern stalls
✔ Ablution blocks with septic tank system
✔ A 30,000-litre elevated water tank connected to a solarized borehole
✔ ICT Hub for digital access and e-commerce enablement
✔ Social hall for community engagements
✔ Market management office
✔ Lactating mothers’ crèche and toddlers’ playroom for family-friendly trading
✔ CCTV cameras and chain-link fencing for enhanced security
✔ Loading zones, service roads, parking, and a Bodaboda shed for smooth movement and safety
These modern markets are not just physical structures, they represent a shift toward an optimized experiential market layout that enhances trader efficiency, improves business hygiene and order, and protects the comfort, safety, and satisfaction of shoppers.
With every new facility, Vihiga moves closer to a thriving, modernized marketplace ecosystem that uplifts livelihoods and strengthens grassroots trade.
