GOVERNOR OTTICHILO INSPECTS PROGRESS OF NORAD-ARNSA AQUACULTURE PROJECTS IN VIHIGA COUNTY

Vihiga County Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo today inspected various projects being undertaken by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) – Advancing Resilient Nutrition Sensitive Aquaculture (ARNSA) Project in the County.
‎The projects visited include:
➡️ Integrated Poultry-Fish-Vegetables Aquaculture System constructed at Moi Girls Vokoli and Nyang’ori Boys – a cost-effective system which ensures poultry manure and leftover feed fertilizes the fish ponds. The expelled nutrient-rich water from the ponds inturn irrigates vegetables on the farm through sprinklers, hence reducing waste and creating more and multiple yields.
➡️ Aquaponics system technology at Kaimosi Vocational Training Center – a sustainable method that combines aquaculture with hydroponics (soilless plant cultivation) in a recirculating environment. Fish waste provides nutrients for plants, which in turn clean the water for the fish, creating a symbiotic relationship supported by a natural microbial process that converts fish waste into plant-usable nutrients.
➡️ Mwitoko Fish Hatchery and Aquaculture Training Center that is currently producing 10,000 catfish fingerlings, 21,000 tilapia monosex fingerlings, and over 100,000 mixed tilapia fingerlings per month. The facility also offers trainings and internships for students.
‎In addition the project has also benefited 450 fish farmers with training, fingerlings, fish feeds, bird and predator nets.
