FIELD VISITS

A team from the County Government of Vihiga comprising of Department of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Dr. Richard Boiyo, Directors Aquila Lwanga (Environment) and George Omusula (Revenue) today conducted field visits to various Small, Medium and Large Scale mining sites across the County to assess their operations and possible ways of collaboration in terms of socio-economic development.

Afterwards, the team held a consultative meeting with the Vihiga Artisanal and Small Scale Mining Association (VASMA) resilient team led by Chairperson Evans Mwihiki who are partnering with the County Government in creating a database and sensitization to all miners within Vihiga County.
It’s worthy noting that the County Government of Vihiga has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Planet GOLD Kenya under the State Department of Environment & Climate Change that seeks to establish an integrated sound management of Mercury for Artisanal and Small-scale Gold mining by reducing/eliminating mercury releases from the Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector.
