MOMENTUM COUNTRY AND GLOBAL LEADERSHIP

A team from MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership (MCGL) led by Senior Advisor Laura Fitzgerald is in Vihiga County to monitor progress in the implementation of key health interventions under the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (RMNCH) and Nutrition programs.
MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership has been a key partner to the County Government of Vihiga, working closely with the Department of Health Services to strengthen health systems through mentorship, capacity building, and continuous quality improvement. Over time, this collaboration has yielded significant results in improving maternal and newborn health outcomes across the county.
Among the notable initiatives being implemented are the E-MOTIVE bundle and the WHO Labour Care Guide (LCG). The E-MOTIVE approach has greatly enhanced the ability of health providers to accurately measure blood loss after child birth, leading to improved management of Post Partum Haemorrhage (PPH) and a reduction in maternal referrals. The WHO LCG, on the other hand, is a tool that aims to support good-quality, evidence-based, respectful care during labour and childbirth.
The visit also provided an opportunity for reflection with mentors and healthcare workers, where lessons learnt were shared, including the importance of ongoing mentorship, training on early maternal warning signs, and innovative ways to monitor mothers amid staffing challenges.
Through this partnership, Vihiga County has seen encouraging outcomes, including fewer perinatal deaths, improved confidence among healthcare providers, and greater male involvement in maternal health.
The County Government remains committed to sustaining these gains and building a resilient, people-centred health systems that guarantee safe motherhood for all.
