PRODUCTIVE ENGAGEMENT

Today, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Science, Technical and Vocational Training Anne C. Desma, together with the Director of Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) and departmental leaders, held a productive engagement with VTC managers. The discussions focused on reducing over-reliance on government capitation by scaling up Institutional Generated Income (IGI).
CECM Anne C. Desma underscored the need to shift from traditional teaching to an entrepreneurial training model, positioning VTCs as hubs of skills, innovation, and enterprise. She highlighted priority areas including forging stronger partnerships with corporates and development partners, introducing market-driven short, evening and weekend courses, establishing vibrant production units such as carpentry, catering, ICT, tailoring and metalwork, as well as promoting “earn-while-you-learn” projects to equip learners with both skills and income. Rebranding VTCs was also emphasized as a key step in boosting youth enrollment and confidence.
As a roadmap to bring reforms in the VTC sector of the broader reforms, the CECM reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor to strengthen VTC capitation and roll out the CBET curriculum. It was also noted that every VTC must identify its most viable trade for revenue generation. With innovation, accountability, and strong government support, our VTCs will become sustainable and produce skilled, self-reliant graduates.
