SAND HARVESTING AND QUARRYING ACTIVITIES

Sand Harvesting and Quarrying activities are widely practiced in Vihiga County due to an increasing in demand for Sand and Quarry products for construction.
However, absence of clear regulations has led to illegal activities and overexploitation of resources.
This causes diverse negative impact on environment, worsening Climate change impacts and increased conflict over resource use.
County Government of Vihiga through the Department of Environment, Energy, Natural Resources and Climate Change has finalized the development of the Sand Harvesting and Quarrying Policy.
This policy seeks to establish sustainable management practices that balance economic benefits with environmental conservation and community well-being. This shall be effected through promotion of sustainable extraction, enforcing site rehabilitation, promoting Climate-resilient technological practices, protection of water sources and safeguarding sensitive ecosystems.
Led by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Dr. Jairus Amayi, the Department organized for a review and validation exercise that brought on board Technical experts, Government officers and stakeholders from Community groups to deliberate and share insights on the policy which is key in safeguarding the environment.
Through the validation exercise, participants not only endorsed the policy but also affirmed their commitment to sustainable resource management in Vihiga County.
