STRENGTHENING LIVESTOCK BREEDING IN VIHIGA COUNTY

A delegation from the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC), led by Chairman Dr. Noor Abdi, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Governor Wilber Ottichilo.
The discussion centered on a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the County Government of Vihiga and KAGRC, set to be signed in January 2026, to boost collaboration in livestock breed improvement and enhance the County’s Animal Breeding Extension Services.
KAGRC’s work directly supports the Sustainable Development Goals, especially the drive to end poverty and achieve food and nutrition security by 2030. The Centre offers:
– Production & sale of superior bull and dairy goat semen
– Supply of liquid nitrogen
– Affordable A.I. equipment & accessories
– Support for counties to revive Artificial Insemination (A.I.) programs
– Farmer outreach through field days, exhibitions, and media campaigns
Excitingly, KAGRC is finalizing an Embryo Transfer Laboratory, a milestone that will further advance breed improvement efforts nationwide.
Governor Ottichilo welcomed the partnership, confirmed his upcoming visit to KAGRC facilities, and requested capacity‑building sessions for newly recruited veterinary officers on A.I. and modern breeding technologies.
Together, Vihiga County and KAGRC are paving the way for a stronger, more food‑secure future. 🌱🐄
