Today marked a significant day for 450 fish farmers across Vihiga County after receiving fish fingerlings, bird nets, predator nets, fish feeds, and a vehicle for the Directorate of Fisheries courtesy of The Norwegian Agency for Development Corporation (#NORAD) -Advancing Resilient Nutrition Sensitive Aquaculture (#ARNSA) grant.
Speaking at the event held at the County Headquarters today, Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo expressed his appreciation to NORAD for their support in uplifting aquaculture in the county.
He encouraged the farmers to capitalize on this opportunity by engaging in strategic marketing efforts, forming Cooperative SACCOs and exploring avenues for value addition, which would turn their aquaculture endeavors into profitable enterprises.
Additionally, the Governor noted that the initiative lays groundwork for a more comprehensive Aquaculture Business Development Program (ABDP) in the second phase.
Deputy National Program Coordinator and Regional Coordinator of ABDP Dr. Isaac Wamalwa emphasized on the critical role of enhancing Aquaculture to address the national deficit of 400,000 metric tonnes of fish in the country so as to mitigate fish importation.
Each fish farmer will receive 1000 finger lings, a bird net, a predator net and fish feeds.
