VIHIGA RECEIVES 69 MILLION SHILLING GRANT FOR DEVELOPMENT OF INLAND BLUE ECONOMY

In a bid to improve aquaculture farming in Vihiga County, Governor Wilber Ottichilo hosted the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs – Hon. Ali Hassan Joho, EGH together with the Principal Secretary State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries – Betsy Njagi, during the signing of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad)- Advancing Resilient Nutrition Sensitive Aquaculture (ARNSA) MoU between the Ministry and County Government of Vihiga.
The MoU operationalizes implementation of the project through NORAD-ARNSA grant of KES 69 million.
The main objective of the NORAD/ARNSA project is to:
✅ Economically empower fish farmers
✅ Ensure job creation
✅ Contribute to food security
✅ Reduce fish feeds cost through local production
✅ Tap in the global demand of fish exportation
✅ Enhance value addition for Agribusiness
✅ Involvement of youths and women
To show readiness and ensure that the KES 69 million project is fully implemented through the County’s Directorate of Fisheries, the department has already mapped out 450 fish farmers across the county and identified two secondary schools (Moi Girls Vokoli and Nyango’ri Boys) to pilot the program.
The existing Mwitoko Fish Hatchery and Training Centre, with our extension officers in each of our 25 wards, will provide the supporting environment towards realisation and growth of the inland blue economy in Vihiga County.
A vehicle and three motorbikes will also be given to the Fisheries directorate for easy access to the fish farms.
