VIHIGA SEXUAL AND GENDER BASED VIOLENCE RECOVERY CENTRE (SGBVRC)

Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo has officially launched the Vihiga Sexual and Gender Based Violence Recovery Centre (SGBVRC) in Wodanga Ward, Sabatia Sub-County today.
Launched in collaboration with various partners including National Government Affirmative Action Fund – NGAAF, UNDP Kenya, The Embassy of Netherlands, CSO Network, Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), Access to Medicines Platform, Vihiga Women in Business, Amkeni Wakenya, Tisa Kenya, Twajali Initiative, National Police Service, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and the Legal Sector among others, the centre will provide a safe haven for SGBV survivors in Vihiga County.
Speaking during the launch, Governor Ottichilo thanked all partners and stakeholders who have and continue to work together with the County Government of Vihiga to enable the operalization of the centre. He also highlighted that the Gender Based Violence Bill is in its last stage of formulation and once enacted, a budget will be set aside for the centre.
On her part, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Gender, Culture, Youth, Sports and Social Services Dr. Ruth Agesa noted that the centre will provide shelter, counselling, paralegal, medical, and psychological services, and economic empowerment opportunities to victims before they are integrated to the community.
Constructed by NGAAF-Vihiga County and handed to the County in March 2024, the SGBV centre has been actualized as part of the Governor’s Manifesto to ensure justice for victims.
The County Government has ensured the continued development of the centre and will continue to enable its operalization with support from partners.
