VIHIGA PLANTS 1200 BAMBOO SEEDLINGS TO MARK WORLD WETLANDS DAY

As the World commemorated World Wetlands Day 2025, Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo who also doubles as the Chair – Environment and Climate Change committee at the Council of Governors led Vihiga residents in a tree growing exercise at Kaimosi Wetlands in Shamakhokho ward, Hamisi Sub County.
According to Governor Ottichilo, most wetlands are degraded due to encroachment which threatens the major role played by wetlands in the water cycle of receiving, storing and releasing water, regulating flows and supporting river life globally.
In a bid to reclaim and restore the wetlands, the Governor noted that his administration is putting in place mechanisms that will enhance protection of wetlands in the County through training communities and sensitizing them on proper wetland conservation and management practice. This will go a long way in increasing public understanding of the importance of wetlands for human well-being and environmental conservation.
The County Boss also took the opportunity to recognize different groups across the County who play an important role in environmental conservation.
