Director Economic Planning Mr. George Siguta on behalf of H.E Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo received an award at the SDGs Annual Conference held in Mombasa where Vihiga County emerged second out of the 47 counties in the mainstreaming SDGs in the county development agenda.

Areas where Vihiga County performed well include:-

Goal 3: Health & well being.

Distance from one health facility to the other is 2.3 KM against the world health organisation benchmark which is 5 KM.

Child Immunization in Vihiga is at 96%.

Skilled deliveries in Health facilities is at 87%.

100% Community health services covered.

Goal 4 : Education

Vihiga is a county with the highest literacy rate which stands at 98%.

ECDE enrollment in Vihiga is at 100% and pupils walk less than 1 KM to a learning institutions.

Goal 6 : Access to clean safe water and Sanitation.

Distance to a water point is 27 minutes or less in Vihiga county. This was achieved by drilling of boreholes, construction and expansion of water infrastructure, rain water harvesting and piped water systems.

Goal 13: Climate Action

Vihiga County is at 37.5% tree cover and 15% forest cover. This has been achieved due to the sustainable conservation measures by the county government and the community at large.

Climate Action governance framework where climate change committees have been formed at the ward level and the communities have participated in identifying climate change projects.

Goal 17 : Building Partnerships.

The county government of Vihiga has signed various MOUs with different organizations to support its development agenda.

More than 30 Counties have come to Vihiga for benchmarking on the use of GIS in resource planning and reporting.
