Climate Change Fund Planning Committee Inaugurated

The Vihiga County Climate Change Fund Planning Committee has been inaugurated to propel the climate change initiatives in the County.

The Committee is tasked with; Initiating and coordinating finance for climate change adaptation and mitigation activities at the community level, establishing Climate Finance Mechanisms, facilitating and planning Climate Change adaptation and mitigation and budgetary framework, seeking and receiving grants from international sources among other tasks.

Vihiga County is among the top ten Counties that have to enact the County Climate Change Fund Act 2019, which aligns with the Climate Change Fund Act of 2016.

In his address Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo urged the Committee to put their best feet forward in addressing the challenges posed by Climate Change. The Committee is led by Dr. Humphrey Mukisira, a career climate crusader.

Some of the climate change initiatives that are expected to be undertaken by the planning committee include; Sustainable Land Management to curb perennial landslides and Vegetable farming.

Makueni County Chief Officer for Environment Becky Nthenge who urged the Committee to synergize climate change protocols from the Ward levels to the County level. She reminded the committee to put public participation at the core of it’s operations adding that climate change concerns the people.

Present at the event were Deputy Governor Dr. Patrick Saisi, partners from Christian Aid led by Nicholas Obuya and representatives from ADS Western.
